A hard compression on a wet root can turn an otherwise good descent into a ride-ending hit. The best enduro body armour is not simply the piece with the biggest protective panel. It is the protection you will wear for the full climb, forget about on technical singletrack and trust when the trail becomes fast, loose and unpredictable.
For enduro riders, especially on a full-power e-MTB, the usual challenge is balancing impact protection with pedalling comfort. You need enough coverage for repeated descents, but a bulky pressure suit that overheats or restricts your shoulders will soon stay in the car. Start with the terrain you ride, the season and the areas you are most likely to hit.
What the best enduro body armour should protect
Enduro falls are rarely neat. A shoulder can meet a tree, an elbow can slide across rock and a low-side can drive the chest or back into the ground. That is why a considered system usually works better than choosing one oversized item and hoping it covers every situation.
A back protector is the central piece for many riders. Look for a protector certified to EN 1621-2, with Level 2 offering higher impact attenuation than Level 1. Level 2 is a sensible choice for bike-park laps, rough alpine-style descents and riders who regularly push their speed. Level 1 can be lighter and cooler, making it a practical option for long natural enduro days where climbing is a major part of the ride.
Chest protection matters more than many riders expect. It is useful when riding steep terrain with exposed rocks, racing enduro stages or spending time in lift-access parks. A proper chest panel should sit flat against the body and stay in place when you are low over the bars. If it lifts, folds or leaves a large gap at the lower ribs, it is not doing its job.
Shoulder protection is most useful for riders who frequently crash sideways into trees, hardpack or rock. Some armour jackets include shoulder cups as standard, while others focus on chest and spine coverage. There is no need to add shoulder armour just because it is available if it compromises your range of movement, but it is worth considering for aggressive terrain.
Elbow and knee pads complete the setup. These are often bought separately because their ideal fit is highly personal. Knees usually hit first in a low-speed dab or slide, while elbows are exposed on off-camber trails and rocky turns. Choose pads that stay centred when pedalling and do not pinch behind the knee or inside the elbow.
Best enduro body armour: choose the right format
The right format depends on how often you need full torso coverage and how much climbing is involved. A protector vest, a full armour jacket and separate pads each solve a different problem.
Protector vests for all-day riding
A vest combines a back protector, and often a chest protector, with a sleeveless fit. It is a strong option for pedal-powered enduro and e-MTB riding because the shoulders remain free and ventilation is generally better than with a jacket. It also layers neatly under an enduro jersey or lightweight shell.
Check the side coverage before buying. Some vests use a broad wraparound design that protects the ribs, while lighter models concentrate on the spine and sternum. Neither is automatically better. A rider tackling rocky descents may value the extra side coverage, whereas someone riding long summer loops may prefer a more open, breathable cut.
Armour jackets for maximum coverage
A full jacket adds shoulder and elbow protection to the chest and back. It makes sense for gravity-heavy riding, regular bike-park sessions and riders who know they want one garment to cover the upper body. A well-fitted jacket can feel secure and tidy because nothing moves independently.
The trade-off is heat. Mesh construction helps, but a jacket is still warmer than a vest and separate elbow pads. Make sure you can reach your normal riding position without the chest plate pressing into your throat or the shoulder sections pulling across your upper back. Test it with your arms forward, not just standing upright in front of a mirror.
Separate back protectors and pads
A lightweight back protector paired with independent knee and elbow pads is the most flexible arrangement. You can wear only knee pads for mellow local trails, add elbows for steep natural descents, then fit the back protector for race days. It is also the easiest approach if your preferred knee pads and elbow pads are from different brands or use different fits.
The downside is that each item must stay in position on its own. This is not a problem with good-quality pads, but it makes sizing even more important. A pad that slips after ten minutes of climbing will not protect the joint when it matters.
Materials, certification and ventilation
Most modern enduro armour uses either hard-shell plastic or flexible impact foam. Hard shells provide a definite barrier against sharp impacts and abrasion, but can feel less comfortable against the body. Flexible materials such as D3O-style viscoelastic compounds are soft while riding and stiffen under impact. They are popular for pads and body armour because they move more naturally with the rider.
Do not judge protection by thickness alone. Certification gives a useful baseline. EN 1621-1 covers limb protection, EN 1621-2 covers back protectors and EN 1621-3 covers chest protectors. A certified protector has been tested for impact performance; a thick-looking foam insert without a relevant rating gives less certainty.
Ventilation is equally practical. Large perforations, open mesh carrier fabrics and segmented panels help air move through the armour on climbs. However, very open construction can sacrifice some wraparound coverage. For British trail conditions, a breathable vest under a jersey is often manageable for much of the year, while a full jacket is better saved for colder weather, uplift days or high-consequence riding.
Get the fit right before choosing more protection
Armour only works when it stays over the area it is intended to protect. Measure your chest, waist, thigh and calf where the manufacturer requests, then compare those numbers with the brand’s own size guide. Do not assume your jersey size will match your body armour size.
Torso armour should sit close without restricting full breaths. The back panel should cover from the upper back down towards the lumbar area, without pushing into your helmet when you look up. Fasten any waist belt firmly enough to prevent movement, then bend, twist and adopt your riding stance. If the protector rides up, try a different size or carrier design rather than over-tightening every strap.
For knee pads, the protective cup needs to cover the kneecap when your leg is bent. For elbow pads, check that the cup remains centred with your hands in a neutral bar position. Silicone grippers are useful, but they should not leave deep marks or cause numbness. Compression fabric often relaxes slightly after the first few rides, so a pad that is already loose in the house will become looser on the trail.
Wear the layers you normally use when testing fit. A base layer, jersey, hydration pack and jacket can all change how the armour sits. Riders using a backpack should also check that shoulder straps do not bunch the chest panel or push the back protector out of place.
A practical buying checklist
Before adding enduro armour to your kit, confirm these five points:
- The certification level matches the speed and consequence of your regular trails.
- The armour stays in place when pedalling, braking and moving around the bike.
- The coverage suits your risks, including chest, ribs, shoulders, elbows and knees where needed.
- The ventilation is realistic for your climate and climbing time.
- The armour works with your helmet, jersey, hydration pack and any winter layers.
Care, replacement and when to step up
Wash armour according to its care label, usually by removing the protective inserts and hand-washing or using a gentle cycle for the fabric carrier. Heat can damage foam and elastic, so avoid tumble drying and leaving pads on a radiator. Let everything dry fully after wet rides to prevent odour and deterioration of the fabrics.
Replace any protector that has cracked, permanently creased, lost its shape or taken a particularly hard impact. Also inspect hook-and-loop closures, straps and mesh panels: worn retention systems can turn good armour into poorly positioned armour.
The best choice is the one that makes you more willing to ride properly protected, not the one that looks most extreme on the hanger. Fit it carefully, use the coverage your trails demand, and you can focus on line choice rather than the next rock waiting beyond the corner.
