Start each ride with a quick visual check. Confirm that both wheels are properly seated, the thru-axles or quick releases are secure, and the tyres have no cuts, embedded glass or exposed casing. Squeeze both brake levers. They should feel firm, with no lever pulling close to the handlebar.

Switch the system on and look at the display or remote control. Check the battery charge, assistance modes and any error message before leaving home. A loose battery that rattles in its mount, a damaged charging-port cover or a pinched cable deserves attention before the next ride, not after it fails on the trail.

After a wet or dirty ride, wipe down the frame, fork, shock body, motor cover and battery area with a soft cloth. Use low-pressure water only when necessary. Never direct a pressure washer at hub bearings, headset seals, motor interfaces, suspension seals, display units or battery contacts. Water forced past a seal can do more damage than mud left on the frame for a few hours.

Let the bike dry before charging it. This is especially relevant when the charging port sits low on the downtube or near the motor. Check that the port and plug are clean and dry, then refit the rubber cover after charging.

Battery care that protects range and lifespan

The battery is the most valuable electrical component on the bike, so storage habits matter. For normal use, charge with the manufacturer-approved charger and avoid leaving the battery fully depleted for long periods. If you will not ride for several weeks, store it indoors in a dry place at a moderate temperature, ideally with a partial charge rather than at 0% or 100%.

Heat and cold both affect performance. Do not leave the battery in a hot car, beside a radiator or exposed to direct summer sun. In cold weather, range will naturally drop. Keep the battery indoors until you are ready to ride when possible, then allow it to return to room temperature before charging.

Inspect the casing and terminals regularly. Stop using the battery if the case is cracked, swollen, leaking, unusually hot or if the contacts are corroded. Do not open a battery pack or attempt a cell repair at home. The correct replacement must match the motor system, voltage, mounting format and compatible charger. A battery that physically fits a frame is not automatically electronically compatible.

It is tempting to top up after every short ride, and modern battery-management systems make this generally practical. However, constant storage at maximum charge is not ideal if the bike then sits unused. The trade-off is convenience versus long-term cell health. Charge fully when you need the range; use a partial storage charge when you do not.

Clean and lubricate the drivetrain correctly

E-bike drivetrains wear quickly because the chain experiences both rider input and motor torque. A dry, gritty chain accelerates wear on the cassette, chainring and jockey wheels. Cleaning it regularly is cheaper than replacing a complete transmission early.

Use a suitable drivetrain cleaner on the chain, cassette and derailleur pulleys, keeping degreaser away from brake rotors, pads and tyre tread. Agitate grime with a brush, wipe everything clean and apply a small amount of chain lubricant to each roller. Turn the cranks backwards to work it in, then wipe away excess. A chain dripping with lube attracts abrasive dirt.

Choose wet lube for persistent rain and muddy riding, or dry lube for dusty conditions. Neither is universally better. Wet formulations last longer in rain but need more cleaning; dry formulations stay cleaner in dust but may need applying more often.

Check chain wear with a chain-checking tool rather than guessing. On an e-bike, replacing a worn chain in time can preserve an expensive cassette and chainring. Also inspect the chainring teeth: hooked or sharply pointed teeth, skipping under load and inconsistent shifting are signs that parts may be approaching replacement.

If your bike uses a Shimano, Bosch, SRAM, Brose or similar system, verify crank, chainring and chain compatibility before ordering. Tooth count, chain speed, mounting standard and e-bike-specific ratings all matter. Components designed for higher e-bike loads are often a sensible choice, particularly for daily riders and powerful e-MTBs.

Brakes, tyres and wheels need closer attention

E-bikes are heavier and often faster, so braking components work harder. Look through the caliper and check pad thickness. Replace pads before the friction material becomes too thin, and replace them immediately if they are contaminated with oil, cleaner or brake fluid. A squealing brake can be caused by moisture or bedding-in, but persistent noise combined with weak braking needs investigation.

Keep rotors clean with a dedicated brake cleaner or isopropyl alcohol on a clean cloth. Never spray lubricant near rotors. If you clean the drivetrain, cover the rear rotor and caliper first. Check rotor bolts, caliper bolts and axle security with the correct torque setting from the component manufacturer.

Tyre pressure is not a fixed number. Rider weight, tyre width, casing, terrain, weather and whether you run tubes or tubeless all change the right pressure. Too much pressure reduces grip and comfort; too little increases the risk of rim strikes, burping tubeless sealant or damaging the sidewall. Check pressure before every ride with a reliable gauge, not by squeezing the tyre.

For tubeless set-ups, inspect sealant every few months and top it up when it has dried out. Spin each wheel and look for wobbles, loose spokes, dents and damaged rims. A minor wheel issue is easier to correct before it becomes a broken spoke or a cracked rim under the additional mass of an e-bike.

Suspension, bolts and contact points

On a hardtail, keep the fork stanchions clean and check for oil residue around the seals. On a full-suspension e-MTB, also clean the shock stanchion and inspect linkage pivots for side-to-side play. Suspension service intervals depend on manufacturer guidance and riding conditions, but muddy riding shortens them considerably.

Do not tighten every bolt by feel. Carbon handlebars, stem clamps, seatposts and suspension hardware require specific torque values. Use a torque wrench and follow the figures printed on the component or specified by the manufacturer. Over-tightening can damage parts just as surely as leaving them loose.

Check pedals, crank arms, handlebar grips, saddle rails and rack fittings if fitted. On urban bikes, loose mudguard stays and pannier racks can become a safety issue quickly. For off-road bikes, inspect the derailleur hanger after a knock and make sure the rear mech shifts cleanly through every gear.

When to use a professional workshop

Routine cleaning, lubrication, tyre pressure and visual inspections are realistic home jobs. Brake bleeding, internal cable routing, bearing replacement, suspension damper service and electrical fault diagnosis usually need specialist tools and experience. Motor-system firmware updates and warranty work may also require an authorised service centre.

Book the bike in if you notice repeated error codes, loss of assistance, unusual motor noise, water inside a display, charging problems, brake fluid leaks or a battery that behaves unpredictably. Continuing to ride through an electrical fault can turn a manageable repair into a bigger bill.

Keep a simple note of chain replacements, brake pad changes, tyre sealant top-ups and suspension services. It makes ordering compatible parts easier and helps you spot patterns in wear.
